Chemical Refraction explores the beauty and terror of synthetic solutions engineered for human needs. Ecospheres are suspended in various solutions of antifreeze and engine coolant in hyper-saturated colors, reflecting the spectra represented in climate impact and global warming maps. Antifreeze and other synthetic refrigerants are designed to protect machines from overheating but in turn accelerate the breakdown of the ozone layer. Floating ecosystems hang precariously in this toxic liquid, protected only by a thin layer of glass. Halocaridina rubra shrimp quietly farm microscopic algae in their balanced environments, unaware of their hazardous surroundings.
